Welcome on the website of the association of The Hague Symphonic Youth Orchestra “Hofstads Jeugdorkest - VHJO, the oldest youth orchestra in the world!! The association offers children and youngsters in the age of 6 to 23 the possibility to play classical music together, whereby the objective is to play on the highest possible musical level in a socialy friendly environment.

The Hague Symphonic Youth Orchestra was founded in 1923 by Mrs.Tilly Talboom-Smits and the first concert was given on April 14, 1923 in theatre “Diligentia” in The Hague, The Netherlands. In the year 1964, after 40 years conducting and managing the orchestra, Mrs.Talboom handed-over the leadership of the orchestra to Lex Veelo, a member-violonist of the Youth Orchestra. In the early seventees the orchestra began to grow and in order to facilitate all children, additional preparatory orchestras were added to the association, which totaled approximately 250 members in the age of 6-23. The currrent association offers possibilities for young stringinstrument players from 6 years old to play together in the String Ensemble in order to learn the first steps of playing jointly classical music. |
